Vinifera is the brainchild of brothers Alexandros, Stathis and Angelos Kosteletos. Having all left Greece to pursue careers in Marketing and Data Analysis, the call of their homeland and the passion for the family legacy eventually proved stronger. They inherited a small vineyard (originally planted with Savatiano and Roditis), winery and wine distribution company established by their grandparents in 1950. In 2014 they rebranded the operation and replanted the two-hectares plot with Limniona and Syrah.
Vinifera now produces wines exclusively with the fruit they grow, following organic and biodynamic principles, and with a minimal intervention approach in the cellar. They believe a wine’s quality and character is primarily achieved in the vineyard. Their vines grow at the foot of Mount Parnassus on an east-facing slope at 400m above sea level. The 2400m mountain shields the plants from the clouds and humid winds of the Corinthian Gulf; such protection decreases disease pressure and promotes the diurnal temperature range essential for aromatic complexity and acidity retention in the grapes.
With the clever blending of some Syrah adding spiciness and lift, this red blend brings out the best out of indigenous Limniona. It is fermented spontaneously and aged for 12 months in old French oak. A surprisingly refined wine, made with passion, from a region often overlooked by wine lovers.
What’s in the glass: Elegant and fragrant nose with aromas of black cherry, prune and cedar, lined by savoury touches of dried sage, black pepper and black olive tapenade. Firm yet soft on the mouth, with a refined mineral backbone. Complex flavours of dark berries, dried cranberries, black olives and dried herbs. The oak is very well integrated as are the fine-grained tannins. The finish is long and pleasantly fruity.
