Description

Tetramythos is a boutique winery located on the slopes of mount Aroania, in northern Peloponnese. It was founded by brothers Aristides and Stathis Spanos who, in 1999, decided to turn their passion for organic farming from a hobby into a fully-fledged commercial operation. They then enlisted Panagiotis Papagiannopoulos, today one of Greece’s most respected winemakers, to lead wine production The three men share a common devotion to the terroir and grape varieties of the Peloponnese and have, since the project’s inception, been committed to sustainable farming practices and low intervention winemaking.

‘Black of Kalavryta’ or ‘Mavro Kalavrytino’ is a rare red grape variety indigenous to the area around the town of Kalavryta, which Tetramythos saved from near extinction about 15 years ago. Although used by a number of producers as a blending companion to other varieties, only Tetramythos produce a single-varietal Black of Kalavryta. The variety has thin skin with low concentration of anthocyanins (the components that give red wine its colour) and significant levels of tannin and acidity. This means it is capable of producing wines that, although rather light in body and colour, have firm structure and freshness.

Tetramythos ‘Black of Kalavryta’ is fermented spontaneously (with natural yeasts only) in stainless steel tanks and then aged for five months in big oak foudres. It is bottled unfined, unfiltered and with minimum addition of sulphur, perfectly reflecting Tetramythos’ low intervention approach, even for their entry-level wines.

What’s in the glass: Gentle nose of strawberries, blackcurrant and plum, topped by earthy notes of dried Mediterranean herbs and wildflowers. The palate is taught and vibrant, with firm tannins and vibrant acidity. On the palate, fresh strawberry and cherry combine with mature flavours of violet, white pepper and dried oregano. A great everyday drinker, with finesse, structure and freshness.
