Very few wine professionals can claim to have built an equally strong reputation for themselves, their estate and the individual wines they produce. Such is the case for George Skouras who started making wine in his father’s garage after returning from his studies in France and went on to become one of the most influential names in the modern history of Greek wine.


While studying at the University of Dijon, Burgundy, Skouras developed his love for fine wine but also his admiration for the ethos and skill of some of the famous local growers. He brought a wealth of knowledge and a fierce determination to establish a boutique winery in the Peloponnese that could stand alongside those estates he most admired. A period of hard manual work with a very small-scale operation were the basis of Domaine’s Skouras’ inception in 1986. Eventually, a fully-fledged modern infrastructure, that now houses all of Domaine Skouras’s production was built in 2004. From leasing small vineyards and working them on his own and by hand, George now leads an iconic estate with vineyards spread across Corinthia, Argolida and Nemea.


One of the main hands-on expertise that George gained in the early stages of his project was a deep understanding of the local grape Agiorgitiko and its behaviour on the Nemea terroir. This knowledge lay the foundation of what would become, and still is, one of Greece’s most iconic wines: Megas Oenos. George blended a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon to Agiorgitiko, adding softness and aromatic complexity to the latter’s intense tannin and acid. The wine quickly gained international acclaim and is still highly sought-after by fine wine lovers and collectors. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and then transferred to new French oak barriques, where it matures for 18 months. It is then bottled and aged for another six months before being released to market.


What’s in the glass: Intense and deep nose with aromas of raspberry, cherry, blueberry and wild blackberry topped by dried mint, black pepper, tobacco and forest leaves. The palate is robust, but the mouthfeel is soft and the tannins are fine-grained. Trademark Cabernet sauvignon flavours of blackcurrant and balsamico, lined by cloves and a touch of vanilla as a result of oak influence. Muscular yet elegant, this wine has great potential to be cellared and develop complexity while retaining its structure and finesse.
