Yiannis Boutaris left his family’s company, the premium and longstanding Boutaris Wine Group, to found Kitma Kir-Yianni in 1997. His goals were to combine the knowhow received from his father and grandfather with a modern outlook, and produce a range of wines with equal respect for tradition and innovation.

His venture actually started earlier, when in 1968 he purchased 50 hectares at the heart of Naoussa. His efforts to replant the local grape, Xinomavro, pioneered the appellation’s revival and gave the indigenous grape variety a new and deserved recognition.

Yiannis then expanded his project to the underestimated and often overlooked Amyndeo region, where winemaking also has an equally deep-rooted tradition.

Akakies is a great showcase for the appellation, Greece’s only DOC for Rosé wines. It is made exclusively from Xinomavro, the iconic red variety from Northern Greece, and combines two winemaking methods of rosé production, short maceration and blending of red wine: 90% of the grapes have a short period of skin-contact to which 10% of free-run juice from red wine production are added. This method gives the wine more colour than your usual pale pink wine. But it also gives it more intensity of flavour, added texture and a better structure.

What’s in the glass: An elegant and food-friendly rosé, with lovely aromas of strawberries, raspberries and red cherries underpinned by notes of rose petals and pink grapefruit. The palate is smooth but with great structure. This is nothing like your boring Provence rosé! It has enough body and intensity to be enjoyed alongside your meal. The acidity is perfectly balanced by a gentle sweet touch. Refreshing and long finish with lingering flavours of cherry and blood orange.
