Description

Gentilini was founded in 1978 by Spiro Kosmetatos upon his return to the family’s ancestral land after honing his trade in Cape Town’s wine country. The project’s name is a tribute to his grandmother’s family, one of noble lineage and great military accomplishments, responsible for the fortification and defence of Kefalonia from the 16th century onwards.

Spiros planted the first hectare of then obscure local grape Robola, now firmly traced and inscribed on the island’s wine history. His efforts to propagate it and document Kefalonia’s unique contribution to Mediterranean wine are the pillars of both his reputation and that of Gentilini’s. Now in his 80s, Spiros remains active as a philanthropist and educator, actively lobbying for the preservation of the local flora and fauna. Gentilini’s management has meanwhile been handed over to his daughter and son-in-law.

This wine is the perfect introduction to the work of the team at Gentilini, to Robola and to the terroir of Kefalonia. The grapes are grown at 650 m altitude, on the slopes of Mount Ainos, at the heart of the Robola PDO appellation. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented separately, according to the specific altitude of each plot. The wine then undergoes four weeks of battonage (stirring of the dead yeast in suspension) to develop additional texture and depth.

What’s in the glass: A fresh and elegant wine, very soft and enjoyable. Fragrant nose that shows all of Robola’s trademark aromas: ripe pear, yellow apple, lemon and white grapefruit. The palate has a lovely balance of fruit, acidity and minerality. Flavours of lime zest, white peach and apple are topped by a herbaceous touch. Lingering and refreshing minerality.
