Gaia was founded in 1994 by Yiannis Paraskevopoulos and Leon Karatsalos. After travelling and training extensively in wine regions around the world, the two agriculturalists wanted to materialise a then provocative idea: to make wines in historical Greek wine regions, using local varieties only, and making them available and renowned worldwide.


Their venture started in Santorini with the purchase of their winery, located right on the beach between Kamari and Monolithos, and the release of their Santorini PDO Thalassitis. Gaia then expanded to Nemea; in 1996 the Notios series, a white and red made from local varieties Roditis, Moschofleri and Agiorgitiko, was launched. The following year Yiannis and Leon bought a vineyard in Koutsi, at 550 m altitude with chalky free draining soils, and built a winery at the heart of the property. This has become the epicentre of their Peloponnese production, which now covers an extensive range.


1997 was also the first year that ‘Ritinits Nobilis’ was produced. As the name suggests, the wine aims to reinterpret the Retsina style in a noble and sophisticated way. Forget the stinky, oxidised examples of yore. This is a ‘new wave’ elegant expression, made with selected Roditis grapes grown on low-yielding vineyards and fermented with a carefully calculated addition of resin from Pinus Halepensis, a local variety of pine tree.



What’s in the glass: Elegant and restrained interplay of orchard, citrus and herbal aromas. Lemon, lime zest, white peach and pear flavours are brought to life by the balsamic lift of dried rosemary, pine resin and eucalyptus. Gentle grip on mid palate, making this an ideal food companion.
