Ktima Biblia Chora was founded in 1998 by Vangelis Gerovassiliou, of Ktima Gerovassiliou fame, and Vassilis Tsaktsarlis. The project builds upon the wealth of international knowledge the two renowned oenologists gained over years of combined experience. Gerovassiliou and Tsaktsarlis have since extended their collaboration to other projects, in Greece and beyond: Ktima Dyo Ipsi in the Peloponnese; Escapades Winery, in Stellenbosch, South Africa; Mikra Thira on the island of Therasia; Titos Eftichidis in Goumenissa.
The Biblia Chora estate is located on the slopes of Mount Pangeon, at Kokkinochoria in Kavala at a site chosen for its ideal exposition at 380m altitude. Following the planting of the first seven hectares of vineyards and the construction of a state-of-the-art winery the first Biblia Chora wines were released in 2001. Now spanning over 57 hectares, Biblia Chora’s vineyards are planted with a combination of Greek and international varieties, all thought to perform particularly well in the Pangeon terroir.
Ovilos White is a unique blend of one of Greece’s most iconic white varieties, Assyrtiko, with Bordeaux’s Sémillon. A marriage of classics that never disappoints. It combines the French variety’s aromatic expressiveness with Assyrtiko’s structure and acidity, for an elegant wine with great ageing potential. The juice undergoes a brief period of skin-contact before fermenting on French oak barrels. The wine then spends a few months ageing in barrel on the lees (dead yeast) which adds further complexity and texture.
What’s in the glass: Expressive nose with citrus, stone fruit and honeyed notes topped by hints of vanilla and toasted almonds. The full-bodied palate is broad and creamy with a complex combination of nectarine, lemon curd, ripe pear, melon, vanilla and cloves. Long finish supported by a gentle acidity and firm texture. Honeyed and nutty notes will develop further with time.
