Herbs and Spices
Greece's Mediterranean climate along with its wild and mountainous landscape give rise to a flora of unique variety and richness. Anyone that has taken a summer walk along a forest or on a rocky island will be familiar with the overpowering smell of herbs. Thyme, oregano, sage, rosemary, chamomile and mountain tea are available in abundance in most areas and as a result are used extensively in the Greek cuisine. At Isle of Olive we are dedicated to bringing some of these wonderful fragrances here in the UK and as a result we have a selection of wild herbs and spices, hand picked and left to dry naturally away from the sun. At our shop one is also able to find Cretan dictamo, saffron (Krokos) from Kozani, mastic from Chios and natural unrefined sea salt from Filiatra.
Honey is rooted so deep in Greek tradition that it is no coincidence it has been considered as the food of the Olympian gods. Beekeeping is an ancient practice dating back to 900 BC and there is numerous evidence supporting the fact that apiculture was highly developed in classical Greece. This tradition has been continued up to our days and Greek honey is currently enjoying the status of one of the best in the world due to its exceptional clarity, colour, texture and taste. These are the blueprints of the unique characteristics of the Hellenic flora, abundant in nectar sources but more importantly it is the loving labour of Greece's beekeepers that contributes to this highest quality. Isle of Olive works directly with some excellent beekeepers from the areas of Crete, Preveza and Karpenissi to bring some wonderful raw honey in the UK.
At Isle Of Olive one important aspect of our work is to constantly look for and source new, quality food products that modern day Greece has to offer.
